If you aren’t already aware of the documentary Sign Painters, it is definitely worth giving up 2.37 minutes of your time to watch the trailer below. From filmmakers Faythe Levine and Sam Macon, the documentary looks at the dying art of sign painting and those wanting to bring it back. As recently as the 1980’s in America storefronts, murals, banners, barn signs, billboards, and even street signs were all hand-lettered with brush and paint. But, like many skilled trades, the sign industry has been overrun by the techno-fueled promise of quicker and cheaper.
Starting in 2010, the directors began capturing the artists and their craft from throughout the country, with more than two dozen artists featured, this documentary shines a light on a barely talked-about but interesting little trade.
